Description:
"A
person with amnesia is looked upon as ill. What of a person who can
remember only this life? Is this then not a case of amnesia on a grand
scale?"
L. RON HUBBARD
Have
You Lived Before
This Life contains 41
case-studies
of past-life incidents discovered during 21 October - 29
November 1958. The book contains an introduction to
the subject of past lives, a statement on how the survey was conducted
and by whom,
and reports by persons attending. These incidents are dated
between the twentieth century and
back further, and their locations range from England,
Norway and Tibet. Here Scientologists penetrate the amnesia of
past lives.
This
edition includes an article by L. Ron Hubbard on the phenomena of
death, a historical sketch of past lives and a description of modern
Scientology counseling that addresses it. The main body of the book
contains excerpts from
the counseling sessions in which past lives were contacted.
For you ever
asked whether you had lived before, this
book answers questions.
WHO
ARE YOU REALLY?
WHO
HAVE YOU BEEN?
You
have lived before.
You have a past identity.
You have the memory of last life.
You have memories of the lives you lived.
|
But
how do you tap into those memories and restore who you were? How can
you recall last lives when
you
cannot recall being four years old?
If you have some awareness that possibly you lived before,
then that is a start.
Is it possible to improve memory? Yes. Is it possible to extend memory,
improve it, so it works better? Yes.
So, why is my memory unavailable to see back then.

HOW DO
PEOPLE KNOW
THEY
HAVE LIVED BEFORE?
"How
do people know they have lived before?" you might well ask.
It
has to do with memory and forgetfulness.
If
a person improved his memory sufficiently, he would be able to remember
everything he had been.
If
a person is forgetful, he often can't even remember what he had for
breakfast yesterday. If a person lives many lives and if he had
forgotten it, if you improved his memory enough, he would only then
begin to remember.
People
forget things if the memory is too painful to them. By gradually
reducing the pain of remembering, people become willing to recall their
memories.
The
character of life and life energies has been a specialty with me in
research since I was at university.
Knowing
about life would also have to include knowing about death.
A
broad vista must lie behind this unknown. No scientist can tell us with
any certainty what death really is.
For
some years I have worked on this from time to time. When we were
fighting the Germans, I suppose like a lot of us, I got used to seeing
death, and right after the war we did enough research on it to know
that science knew nothing about it, really, except that bodies just
ceased to function.
Ever
since, it has continued to interest me, as I think it interests all of
us. Certainly it concerns all of us.
Some
people, it would seem, don't really want to know. To them I say, it's
just another field of research, why are you so upset about it?
In
research you don't
believe things. You find out
if
they are true or false.
Someday
we will know much more about this. Just now, from evidence to hand, I
would say that the priest and minister have more evidence in their
favour than the scientist, who, in a rather boorish way has been trying
to sweep away religion for the past few decades.
I
noted when the book of case histories (Have
You Lived Before
This Life?)
was released, some of
the national press became very upset with it.
The
first task of a scientist is to write down what he finds, not what he
hopes will be believed. Truth is not determined by its appeal but by
the evidence.
I
think it's time science stop trying so hard to penetrate the craters of
the moon or blow up Earth and started to study something a little
closer to home - man. Then maybe we'd have less crime, less accidents,
a lessened chance of war.
Apparently
even in this world, it takes a brave man to start studying man. But I
feel it's time we knew a bit about ourselves. Maybe we'd lead happier
lives. And maybe we'd have a better chance of preventing or surviving
the next war if we knew what made us function.
But
that's a very serious line of thought and research is not that grim.
It
is certainly more interesting than simply sitting and waiting for the
day the atomic bombs may fall.

Ron Hubbard

Q.
So how do you get into the memory of a past life?
A.
Get the idea that memory is like a film strip, and it has to run
through a machine to view it. But that strip is dirty, and the dirt
is
pain. You can send that memory strip so far back until that pain, or
dirt, clogs up the motors and the memory machine just refuses to
operate. That is what has happened to you. But, if you were to clean up
that memory strip, clean away the
pain, you would be able to go back
further. But the more you go back, the more there is to
clean - all down that memory strip. You will easily get back
one or two lifetimes, but there is that pain again, and you have to
clean it up too.
What
is that pain? That
pain is the upset, the misemotion, injustice, all those
things done to you. That is what needs to be cleaned up.
Emotional pain.

You know a real memory when you see it,
right? You can remember your
last birthday, or something like that. You know it was real. And you
know what it is like to imagine, right? Can you tell the difference
between memory and imagination? Of course you can. If you were
asked
to remember this morning's breakfast, and you did, could you be
convinced it
was just imagined? No, because there is something that tells you it is
really real. This is the same as something you remember from a long
time ago.

PAST
LIVES
Past lives, or times we
have lived before, are suppressed by the painfulness of the memory of
those former existences.
The memory is contained in mental image pictures which, on close
viewing, are capable of developing a reality “more
real” than present time.
Where a person has been tortured or killed without adequate reason, the
injustice of it causes him or her to protest by holding in suspension
in time the picture.
To restore the memory of one’s whole existence, it is
necessary to bring one up to being able to confront such experiences.
A person with amnesia is looked upon as ill. What of a person who can
remember only this life? Is this then not a case of amnesia on a grand
scale?
Psychosomatic illnesses such as arthritis, asthma, rheumatism, heart
trouble, and on and on for a total of 70 percent of man’s
ills—and women’s too—are the reaction of
the body against a painful mental image picture. When this picture is
cleared away—if it is the right picture—the illness
usually abates.
Actual fevers and pain, etc., can turn on just by restimulation of
mental pictures in a person.
The recovery of whole memory could be said to be a goal of processing
(another term for auditing, the form of spiritual counseling unique to
Scientology).
Past lives are “incredible” only to those who dare
not confront them. In others, the fact of former existence can be
quickly established subjectively.
There are many interesting cases on record. One was a case of a young
girl, about five, who, hanging back at church, confided to her
clergyman that she was worried about her “husband and
children.” It seems she had not forgotten them after
“dying out of” another life five years before.
The clergyman did not at once send for the chaps in white coats.
Instead, he questioned the truly worried child closely.
She told him she had lived in a nearby village, and what her name had
been. She said where her former body was buried, gave him the address
of her husband and children and what all their names were, and asked
him to drive over and find out if they were all right.
The clergyman made the trip. Much to his astonishment, he discovered
the grave, the husband, the children and all the current news.
The following Sunday he told the little five-year-old girl that the
children were all well, that the husband had remarried pleasantly and
that the grave was well kept.
She was very satisfied and thanked the clergyman very
much—and the following Sunday could not recall a thing about
it!
Past lives are not the same as the theory which has been called
“reincarnation” in Hinduism. That is a complex
theory compared to simply living time after time, getting a new body,
eventually losing it and getting a new one.
The facts of past lives, if you care to pursue them, are best seen from
the viewpoint of the person receiving spiritual counseling in the hands
of a competent Scientology practitioner. The hypnotic handling of such
is not advised. Only by higher levels of awareness does one learn, not
deeper levels of unconsciousness.
An amusing sidelight on past lives is the “famous
person” fixation. This more than anything else has
discredited having lived before. There is always some madman
“who was Napoleon,” always some girl “who
was Catherine the Great.” This evidently means that the
person, living a contemporary life to a famous figure, was so
unsuccessful that he or she “dubbed in” the great
personage. A practitioner who runs into
“Beethoven,” after a while finds the person
receiving spiritual counseling was really the handler of a street piano
in that life—not Beethoven!
But all rules have exceptions, and a practitioner once found someone
who claimed to have been Jim Bowie, the famous frontiersman who died at
the doubly famous Alamo in Texas. And after much work and great
skepticism found he really did have Jim Bowie!
Viewing children in the light of knowledge of past lives causes us to
revise our estimations of causes of child behavior.
Evidently the newborn child has just died as an adult. Therefore he or
she, for some years, is prone to fantasy and terror and needs a great
deal of love and security to recover a perspective of life with which
he or she can live.
Life is never dull in Scientology. The motto is—What is, is,
not what we wished it were.
Q. With
regards to pain in your past life, how do you know
that pain is real?
A. Ever
been really hurt emotionally? You feel it like a lance went through
your
heart, or you were hit by a train? A girl or guy has walked out on you?
Maybe a
husband or wife has left? Maybe a child has died, been killed? Maybe
you have been unbearably betrayed? You have the emotions of that with
you now. It is real pain. You know it.
You have to remove this pain to recall
better. You certainly know when you are doing
that. You feel the upset, the betrayal, the loss. It is very
real. It involves anger, grief, hate, apathy, and eventually
cheerfulness. Well, so it is as you go back into time. You will
experience these exact same emotions, but for memories way back. They
carry the same misemotion.
Q. WHY BOTHER
WITH
YOUR PAST LIVES?
A. You
and what you do now is
determined by what
you did then. Until you can find out what happened to you, and what you
did, you are merely a puppet to the past.
Your past plays you like a wind up doll. You think you have a choice in
life? You think you are in control? Hardly. You react and
act predictably, acting out your part in life's
play. You
will
make mistakes again which you made before, unless you finally
break the
strings that bind you.
Do you ever wonder why you want to hurt your mate when she or he left
you? What was the compelling force then? It was something, and real,
and it has its roots in your
past.
Ever feel you could be a great leader and somehow life wraps around you
with failure?
Ever see your world fall apart after you had it beautifully created all
around you?
Ever had a great job, only to see it collapse to dust, time and time
again?
Ever have a dream partner but know this relationship too will die like
the last one? You just know it will. And it does?
Ever made decisions that went against you, and you made them knowing
they were wrong?
Want all this reversed?
Your answer is yes, yes, and yes!
And the reason why I can ask these questions, and have such certainty?
Because I already know the answers. Buy the book now, and find out for
yourself.

PERSONAL
COMMENTS ON PAST LIVES
Prior to my knowledge and use of Dianetics I had thought that past
lives was the subject of reincarnation and that it was all a matter of
belief. After my first Dianetic session - in which I re-experienced a
past life, I realized that past lives are not a matter of belief but a
matter of awareness.

There is no doubt in my mind that L. Ron Hubbard's research has
definitely confirmed that every individual, including myself,
eventually see events which are not of this life-time in counseling.

I
was 23 when I first ran into Scientology. I received some Pastoral
Counselling, and discovered that I hadn't lived only one lifetime. I
recalled places I'd been and things I'd done. i found that as I
discovered more of my past there was more of me here to look forward to
the future. The interesting thing about this is that I
wouldn't have believed it if someone had told me what I'm telling you.

In all the years that I had looked at the subject of Past Lives they
never became totally real to me until I had some Scientology Auditing
(counselling). At that point, with the help of a Scientology Auditor
(counsellor0, I was able to actually look at who I was in past lives
and perceive all the surroundings with excellent perception and have
lots of fun doing it.. I even regained old abilities in music that had
gotten lost along the way.

THE PHENOMENA OF DEATH
(EXCERPT)
L.
Ron

Death
is in itself a
technical subject. You can with considerable confidence, reassure some
husband whose wife has just died that she got out all right and she is
going some place to take up a new body. If you got there while that
person could still communicate with you, in the last moments, you'd
find they usually have something spotted, something planned.
The person doesn't just back out ordinarily and forget all about it.
They back out of it with full identity and hang around for quite a
while. They're usually there for the funeral, certainly. They very
often hang around their possessions to see they're not abused. And they
can be given upsets if their wishes aren't carried out with regard to
certain things. It used to happen that thetans (the Scientology term
for the life-force or spirits) would punish people for not carrying
out their wishes after death. People then said this was superstition,
and science was against superstition. Well its quite interesting that
we have turned around the other way finding out what's science and
what's superstition and we find out that a being is capable of almost
anything providing it is within his ability to execute.

TECHNOLOGIES

Scientology
technologies
used in therapy differ greatly from hypnotism. In hypnotism the aim is
to put the patient to sleep and make him as irresponsible as possible
for his answers. In Scientology, the reverse is true -- the patient is
made more and more alert, more and more responsible and truthful.
A "past life," for instance, brought out of a patient by hypnotism has
little value since it is taken from an irresponsible subject. A "past
life" recovered by Scientology techniques is detailed by a fully alert,
responsible person who, by heightened powers of awareness, has direct
and full knowledge of anything that has occurred to him. Therefore, if
this were simply a recounting of forty-one experiences taken from
hypnotized people, it would have little value4. But forty-one
experiences recovered from fully alert people with no hypnotism,
suggestion, or persuasions of new scientific value and casts a
different light on the possibility of 'past lives."
In the first place, none of these people were told to recover a life.
They were asked....

PERSONAL
COMMENTS ON PAST LIVES
It
is very
natural for me to understand now that past lives are a
natural and logical consequence of one's existence through time. It is
proven so simply in Scientology, which, in my opinion, is a subject
that provides one with the ability to reason purely without the fixed
ideas that have afflicted most of the past religions and present day
"science."
VA PhD

Before i started studying Scientology, I had heard of the idea of past
lives but I had never heard of any proof. It was just something to
speculate on. I was in for a surprise when I received Scientology
counselling. Not only did I discover with certainty that I have lived
previously many lifetimes, but I saw how the unpleasant occurances from
past lifetimes caused me trouble this lifetime.
PC

I,
myself, being of a generally skeptical nature, was extremely doubtful
of past lives at first. After all, I reasoned, anyone could create
fantasies of past experiences, fabricated of bits and pieces of data
and a fertile imagination. However, in the course of Scientology
counselling, I found that I was not making up these experiences and
that they carried considerable emotional charge along with them, in a
way that manufactured stories would not have done.
Present time lifetime hang-ups and neuroses do not resolve without
finding their roots in past life experiences, and they do uniformly
resolve when these experiences are located.

WHAT IS
THE SOUL?
What's
this thing called a soul? That's the livingness, the beingness, of a
person. That's all there is alive about him. Only let's not anchor it
down with a lot of past twists of definition. Let's put it into this
wise: let's say the word soul
is life, is the spirit, is the thinkingness, is the awareness or any
such term which communicates to you the meaning of life and vitality.
Because it most closely approaches what Man has understood to be the
soul, it's a very easy thing to use this term. But because this term is
misleading, in Scientology it is called the thetan. Now, the crux of
the whole problem lay in an understanding of the fact that a man was
not mass. A man was not his body. A man was not a being like a woundup
doll. He was not a collection of meats and bloods which coursed and
flowed.
Like a little child will play with a doll, the livingness of Man is the
thing which makes the doll have a game. And that doll would
have no game without the livingness of that child. You see that
clearly? The doll would simply lie there and wouldn't even say "Mama."
But with the child playing with the doll, the doll becomes enhanced
with livingness. It seems to talk, it seems to walk, it seems to want
and not want. It seems to communicate and not communicate. And that is
the activity of the doll.
And why does it have this activity? It's because a child is playing
with the doll. A child has a game there centered around the doll. And
we remove the child from the room, and the child is gone no more than a
split second and we have an awfully inanimate doll. It has no life.
So this thing is capable of thought and thinkingness. It cares whether
he lives or dies, it's capable of thought and thinkingness and further
tests demonstrate that when a man's dead, the child has left the room.
And that's all that's happened: Somebody didn't care to play with the
doll anymore. Somebody didn't patch it up again.
All the way up to that point, this somebody or this thinkingness or
this somethingness which cares whether it lives or dies or whether
things live or die, was willing to posture and animate this doll. And
then one day didn't care to anymore and the doll has lain in a corner
ever since, unmoved.
And there, actually, we have the explanation. You understand that by
this explanation we do fantastic things. In a thoroughly scientific
way, we simply raise a person's ability and his IQ and everything else.
Nobody has ever worked with this item that way before. Nobody has ever
done this sort of thing before, and we're doing it today in Scientology.
And when we look this over, we discover there's a sort of gradient
scale of being there, a gradient scale of presence, a gradient scale of
caring, a gradient scale of being there, a gradient scale of
being able to participate in the game called "life." And we find, oddly
enough, that when the livingness goes, there is nothing but deadness.
And the livingness is goodness, and when it starts to depart, it leaves
nothing but the impulse, whatever it is - an impulse which cannot
differentiate between good and evil.
And all we have to do is get this livingness, this beingness, to look a
little harder, care a little more, be willing to participate a little
further - he gets brighter, he gets better, he gets more capable. And
not only that, but his motives get better otherwise since his motives,
himself, natively, are very good motives. It's only the machine motives
that are bad. And so the more he participates with the game, the better
the game gets.

Ron Hubbard, 1955
